Chapter Eighteen

“I thought we were supposed to be meeting at this location? What kind of game are you playing, Rainier?”

Harry gave a lot of leeway while he was transported to the location coordinates given to him. He allowed the blindfold and the hood covering. He allowed the no weapons stipulation. He even allowed the burner phone instead of his personal cell phone to keep in contact. But once they were at their destination, to be told that he would be meeting Rainier at the prearranged location, only to then be told that the meeting would be via secured video link, it was a bit more than he could deal with in that moment.

To say he was livid was an understatement.

His adversary was undeterred and unconcerned with his plight. “I unfortunately had to make other arrangements. I can’t be entirely certain that I can trust you to keep your word.”

“You have my daughters, you son of a bitch! Why in the bloody hell would I endanger their lives? Are you fucking daft?” Harry couldn’t keep his emotions under control any longer. He was being toyed with; if he’d known he was going to be playing a shell game, he would have tried to find his girls himself. “You must be an idiot or something, or you’ve been watching too many fucking action movies.”

“While I understand your frustration, there is no need for the conversation to devolve in such a manner.” Rainier’s face and voice were both hidden and distorted, which only served to infuriate Harry even further. “You want what you want, and I want what I want. This should be a simple transaction.”

“Then, why hide your face and your voice? Are you afraid I might recognize either and figure all this shite out on my own?” Harry queried. “There must be something that is spooking you to go through all of this old-school, cloak-and-dagger bullshit.”

“I take these measures for obvious reasons, much like your current employer, yes?”

“I don’t give a fuck at this point. At least I know the identity of my current employer. You say you want to make me a partner in your organization, yeah? Transparency and trust are the pillars of a good business relationship.”

“And what assurances do I have if I do decide to honor your request?”

“You want what you want, and I want what I want, remember?”

“You are correct, so, I guess this is the part to where I make my request, is that about right?”

“You’re catching on.”

Rainier let out a chuckle. “Fine, then let’s get to it. I want the Wraith erased from the landscape.”

“That isn’t simple.”

“Neither is extracting your daughters from their current situation.”

“You put them there.”

“Semantics, Harry. Focus on the task at hand.”

Harry’s frustration continued to mount. He needed to figure out how to balance the scales. “I want proof of life before I do anything whatsoever. There is no guarantee that they are even alive and that you will have me on a suicide mission.”

“Is my word not enough?”

Harry scoffed and laughed at the implication.
